Core Workouts: Have you been doing it all wrong?
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "core"? I’ve been asking many people this question and their answers are pretty similar. Most people say something along the lines of "it’s yours abs", "it’s your stomach", or "it’s your 6-pack". The truth is that the abdominal muscles are only a part of your core.
So, what is your core? Take your body and imagine you remove your arms and legs - what remains is actually all part of your core! The core consists of several muscles that work together to support your spine, provide stability and generate power during movement. This means that core workouts need to be comprised of much more than the standard sit-up or crunch. If you didn't know this and you've been training your core all wrong, don't worry - you're not alone!
You may have also heard that performing squats and deadlifts are the best and only exercises you need to obtain strong abdominal region. However, that is not necessarily true. Squats and deadlift are fantastic compound movements that help increase core strength and hypertrophy of back extensors, however they do no target all aspects of your core.
As there is a lot of misinformation around this topic, I would like to share some of my favourite core and abdominal exercises. Try including some of these in your workout routine.
