Natural Pre-Workout Drink

One of the most common questions my clients ask me is: "Should I take a pre-workout drink before a workout and which one do you recommend?". At Gooroo, we believe in staying fit naturally without compromising your health. So, my recommendation is often surprising and does not come in the form of commercial sport or pre-workout drinks. The truth is, you can make your own pre-workout drink with ingredients almost everyone has in their kitchen: coffee, protein powder, coconut oil or MCT oil, and ice. I've tried many types of commercially-prepared pre-workout drinks and found they never left me feeling my best. Often, they taste awful, they're loaded with sugar and other additives and they can get pretty expensive. On top of that, many of these drinks can contain ingredients that are potentially harmful to your health. Needless to say, I needed to find an alternative.

While doing some research, I have came across this interesting article about a pre-workout drink created by Paul Levesque, aka Triple H, called “FRAPOCCINO”. His drink consists of the following:

  • Two scoops of Isolate Protein Powder
  • Powdered Starbucks coffee
  • Macadamia nut oil
  • Ice

He blends it all up for a healthy coffee protein smoothie.

I tried it once and I was hooked. Its quick, inexpensive and I know exactly every ingredient that goes into it.

Here is my personal version of the pre-workout drink:

  • One or two scoops of good-quality protein powder (I like hemp protein or Vega Sport)
  • Black coffee
  • MCT oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Ice
  • Optional: banana, cinnamon

Blend it all together and consume prior to your workout. The coffee and MCT provide quick sources of fuel without the "crash" you often experience with commercial drinks. Its healthier, you feel better, it tastes better and you save money... What's not to love? Try it out and let me know what you think!

P.S. I first saw the idea for this drink in a book called "Tools of Titans" by Tim Ferris (it's definitely worth a read).
